It is safe to say angling is one of the most commonly practiced pastime activities by Americans, at least other than camping. Throughout the year, adrenaline driven anglers travel to the many rivers and lakes in the country to try their luck catching bass, crappies, salmon and lots of other fish species. Read on to find out more about ice fishing Upper Red Lake.

Winter is a highly favored angling time by the locals and visitors. The lakeside is lined up with lots of resorts, most of them offering rental angling equipment to visitors. These resorts are strategically located close to the reservoir, meaning you get to enjoy short travel distances to your boat.

Finding the right accommodation requires some diligence. As much as there is no shortage of resorts in the area, not all of them have the desired amenities and ease of accessibility. A place with a bar and restaurant would be ideal for unwinding after a tiring day of angling.

As the snowfall in the area gets pretty dense in winter, your choice of accommodation should be somewhere where you can access the lake via ploughed roads. A resort with a heated fish cleaning section on site would be perfect as well. This notwithstanding, some anglers prefer bringing their own angling and cleaning equipment, especially those who haul their boats from afar.

You will notice a stark difference between Lake Red and other water bodies in Minnesota. The local authorities recently tightened the rules governing angling and packaging. The new rules in place are credited with contributing to the notable increase in the crappie and walleye population. These days, one can get a fairly good catch regardless of where he is situated in the reservoir.

A vast majority of the local resorts also host winter events every year. One such event is the annual Red Fest that takes place every January. There is always a new theme for every celebration of the event. Indoor angling contests also get held as part of the festival, with winners bagging various gifts and cash prizes. The festival also features nightlong entertainment at the local bars.

The local authorities strictly enforce angling regulations, just as is the case in many other areas in the US. Anglers are limited to no more than 3 walleye catches a day. The limit stands at 3 for northern pikes. Only 10 crappies are permitted to be caught per day.

Packaging is another activity that the authorities closely monitor. Fillets ought to have a square inch of skin left for identification. They should also be packed individually. This makes counting easier.

There are sections of the reservoir that are also off limits for fishing activities. One critical location is the Indian Reservation. It is a must for all anglers to be aware of their GPS coordinates. In case you venture past designated boundaries into tribal lands, you will be fined by the local tribal council.

It is important to note that most resorts forbid large groups from making single reservations. Only a few may be willing to allow this. If planning to reside in a cabin, carry cooking equipment and bedding.
