Before people developed and created technologies and better tools to accomplish tasks, humans used crude weapons to hunt and defend themselves. The activity helped the forefathers of modern people to survive the harsh conditions of the jungle. While the motive has evolved, the fun and the excitement remain. If you are a hunting enthusiast, it is time you considered planning for ocellated turkey hunts.

Rules vary from one state to another, but fall and spring are the best times to hunt this bird. In spring, people enjoy themselves hunting the male species, also known as gobblers. Fall is when enthusiasts get to hunt both males and females. Wild turkey mate in spring and you can use make certain sounds to get the gobblers to come out within shooting range. The ocellated species resembles the wild turkey and is found in few places worldwide.

Since you will be firing some shots, you need to have a suitable gun. A shotgun is one of the most suitable options. In some places, the authorities have no problem if you choose to use a rifle that is of low caliber. Things have been changing, and today, some enthusiasts choose to use arrows. Use whatever works for you, within the specified rules.

You will need to collect appropriate clothing for the exercise. You need to conceal yourself in some way as the animals have a reputation for being sharp-sighted. If they see you, they will likely run away to safety. Gloves, a mask, boots, a hat, and pants will keep you fully covered. A lot of people nowadays wear a turkey vest that has room for calls and harvested turkey.

There are two categories of calls used in hunting these birds. There are friction and air calls. Air calls include Turpin yelps, trumpet calls, snuff tube calls, and diaphragms. Friction calls comprise box calls, push pin calls, scratch boxes, and pot and peg calls. The two types of calls are easy to use. Experienced hunters and beginners can use these calls to call in the birds.

Locator calls are another idea you need to understand. Crow calls, owl hooters, and hawk calls are locator calls. These calls serve to shock the birds so that they can make their natural sounds, after which you are likely to find them easily.

Decide on the hunting ground. Camouflage yourself, take your arrows or gun and walk or drive toward the location. Use a call of your choice to draw the fowls from wherever they are. The animals will start coming out, and you will see them. Point the arrow or gun at the head and shoot. Aiming from the side is preferred as it results in a better quality harvest.

If you want to have a lot of fun, consider inviting some of your friends over. Nothing is quite like doing something you like with people whose company you enjoy. Doing something all of you love has the potential of bringing you closer. Whether you have been hunting these birds for the last several seasons or are a newbie beginning to enjoy the hobby, bird hunting will always be a lot of fun.
