Getting a wild turkey is like a trophy, but there is also the requirement for you to carry with you a wily gobbler when you go out hunting on public land. Nevertheless, these public land birds are very smart and are aware of most of the tactics used by hunters than the other birds. Getting one turkey calls for so much patience as well as a shift in the strategies and very much scouting. Those wishing to public hunt have to be aware of where the birds feed, roost, travel, strut as well as their reaction to pursuing pressures, so as to come up with a suitable plan for that particular situation. Below are some of the guidelines that will guide you when spring turkey hunting Texas.

One of the best ideas is to stay away from the road. Most hunters tend to hand close over the road making it harder to get the birds. Most birds go far away from the road, and this reduces their chances of being caught up. Moving far away from the road also increases the chance of getting birds that are not pressured and those that will be responsive to your calling. These birds are also less wary.

There are very high chances of getting turkey on the small pieces of land. Many hunters do not go shooting in the small areas because they think that they will not get any birds there or even turkeys. You should be more persuaded to kill in these low areas because they are unexploited and the odds are high that you will get your bird easily and fast. There is a high possibility that the turkeys will shift to the less crowded areas by hunters hence settling for the small lands.

You can also change the usually used pattern for shooting by most hunters. This will shorten the time you spend looking for your birds. The hunters will follow a particular road during shooting, and this will form pressure on that side of the land, making the birds very suspicious. You will, therefore, get a turkey in a short time when you hint from the direction they least expect. You can also hunt backward for you to push the birds toward your direction.

Be in front of the competition by shifting the pattern of going to the woods before the start of the season. You should master the land for the search to be quicker. For this to be easy, mark the strut zones, property boundaries as well as starting points on GPS units or maps.

Locating a good spot is also important during the hunt. Normally, the birds will be able to differentiate a good call and a bad call. Turkeys on public lands will mostly associate the bad call with the hunters, which can make them suspicious. However, making a good plan that will attract the birds in your direction is recommended.

You should come up with good and quality decoys for you to captivate your birds. If you do this, you will have them in a particular area for enough time that will enable you to shoot them.

It is also essential for you to know that you should select your decoy based on the type of bird that you are shooting and the locality of the hunt. In many instances, the run and short gun are very aggressive and effective methods that will likely work for you. However, just like in all other endeavors, you need to cultivate patience.
