Not a lot of time has passed since the anglers had their heyday making or catching their own baits. Fishing is an easy thing to do, and much of things used for it are the same, and lines, rods and reels can be improvised. With just a few basics, you can simply gear up with some bait and tackle and go out fishing on a hot day.

Bait is something that most people have preferences for, some believing that live bait is the best, while others trust their old fly or floating lure. Handmade fishing lures are a quirky market item with trends cropping up every now and then and becoming standards for a new generation of anglers. But the basic need is the same for having these look like things the big fish like to eat.

The nature of these things say that they conform to natural standards. But then, some think that they should come in bright and bold colors. These will also depend on the species that are fished for, because there are specific food that are popular for different fishing areas that are used.

Flies are used by anglers who like fish that like food to be those of flying insects like flies, gophers and such. The colors for these are often bright, and the brighter they are, the tastier they will be for certain species. So lure colors are made up of different considerations, from individual preference to nature inspired things, and it is often applied to imitate the colorful fish low on the chain.

Again, these can be done DIY, and you can choose from among a variety of your personal preferences. For instance, you can customize on the soft wood that you use for shaping the lure. Other things you need also come in many varieties, for the eye screws, to hooks, splits rings, paints and acrylic colors.

The basic stuff will not differ much, things like epoxy and water sealing for making the item strong. There might be an optional base for these or you can leave the wood uncolored. Many if not all the items you need can be bought at angling shops, which will also feature excellent commercial items along this line if you have prepared DIY stuff.

Many tools can be used for shaping the wood. The one you use should be sharp and small enough for the small pieces of wood you are shaping, so that the soft wood will not break apart. You might use a rasper or those tools specific to woodworking, using other things will pose the risk or your cutting your hand.

Machines cannot mass manufacture lures, because the softwood will break easy from all the power tools and machinery used. Making them is a small enough part of the recreational side of the industry. They are easy enough to do DIY and will not be time intensive or require much effort.

These things are highly cost effective and inexpensive, and experienced anglers know how to make them with care. Many believe in the divine spirit guiding the fishing ritual and the making of lures. This is part of the lore that makes for the best angling experience.
