Students receive training in how to disarm opponents and in defense moves such as blocks, escapes, grabs, and falling safely on the ground. In judo, students learn how to push opponents into submission by applying pressure in certain body parts.

Hybrid and mixed fighting systems are usually full contact sports that allow students to use various tactics. The tactics employed may or may not be martial. Students can apply striking and grappling styles when standing or when they are on the ground. Participants are welcome to learn multiple tactics for the purpose of balancing their skill set. The sport can be dangerous and that is why protective gear such as gloves and headgear may be worn to minimize impact from punches.

In conclusion, success in this sport depends on how committed one is among other factors. Correctly executing the various moves takes a lot of experience and hard work. Students get an opportunity during demonstration classes to assess how skilled they are. Students are promoted in most schools upon demonstrating a mastery of skills and the will to acquire more knowledge.
