Children who are still toddlers can take classes in gymnastics when accompanied by a parent or caretaker. These classes take full advantage of a childs love of constant action. There is no formality imposed on them in early classes. A toddlers endless energy is used to develop new skills. Good health habits begin. Kids have a lot of fun in these sessions.

Children develop a sense of balance and coordination by attempting somersaults and cartwheels. They learn to stand in line and take turns. They learn to interact with other little ones. Developing the ability to follow directions is another advantage.

Mastering such activities as walking on a balance beam and swinging on a bar gives them a sense of pride. They develop self-confidence. Their cognitive abilities are advanced as well as their physical prowess.

Gym classes offer advantages over team sports for the young child. However, they do serve as good preparation for future team sports. There is no competition and no combative behavior. As the child improves his skills, he will gain self-confidence.

The older children can take recreational classes or advanced training classes. At an older age girls and boys perform different exercises. Girls are trained to do floor exercise, uneven bars, vault and balance beam if they plan to enter competitions.

The events for boys are the parallel bars, rings and high bar. They also compete in floor exercise and vault, as do the girls. Both show amazing strength, grace and control over their movements.

After a certain age the girls and boys take separate classes. If preparing for competition they spend long hours practicing their skills. Those who are interested can expect to work hard.
